Black Trace

A Firebrand Thriller

YOU CAN DISAPPEAR FROM MI5.
BUT YOU CAN'T DISAPPEAR FROM ITS ENEMIES.

Weeks after the Candleblack siege, Laura Thorpe is living under a false name in a windswept Northumberland village, trading bureaucracy for isolation. She has no badge. No clearance. No protection.

Just one rule: trust no one.

But when a newspaper arrives bearing a cipher only her former unit could decode, Laura realises someone is trying to reach her—or flush her out. Then a photograph arrives. It’s of her. Taken that morning.

Suddenly, she's back in the game.

What follows is a hunt through the forgotten archives of British intelligence—a decades-old black ops file named Black Trace, containing the names of whistleblowers, dissenters… and traitors. It’s a kill list. And Laura’s name is on it.

To survive, she’ll have to out-think the same system that trained her.
To uncover the truth, she’ll have to confront the people she left behind.
And to stay alive… she’ll have to stop running.

The author has covered the controversial subject of the death penalty and, right from the very start, you wonder if you can truly make a murderer like Obadiah, who kills because he can and wants to, feel empathy and love. Hellbound does not give you the author's opinion on the death penalty so you are not swayed in a particular direction. Instead, but he gives you the facts, and leaves you to make your own mind up about serial killer, Obadiah Stark... very clever!" - Crime Book Club (2015)

How do you punish pure evil? How does one condemn a soulless being who has no capacity for caring? Read The Tally Man... you'll enjoy the trip.

"David’s book describes such a sad reality. Surely, now, the issue of bullying in the NHS cannot be swept under the rug!”

About David McCaffrey

David McCaffrey was born in Middlesbrough, grew up in West Sussex, and now makes his home in Redcar. With a long career in the NHS, he most recently served as Lead Nurse for Infection Prevention and Control at James Cook University Hospital.

His writing journey began after the birth of his first son, when he felt compelled to put an idea to paper. In 2010, he was accepted onto the prestigious writing coach programme run by Steve Alten, international bestselling author of Meg and The Mayan Prophecy. From that experience came his debut novel, The Tally Man—the first step in a career that has since spanned psychological thrillers and beyond.

While thrillers remain his passion, David is also a vocal campaigner against bullying and harassment in the NHS and wider society. His book Do No Harm: Bullying and Harassment in the NHS hit Number One in both the Nursing and White Collar Crime categories of the Amazon Kindle charts in November 2018, and went on to top the U.S. Kindle charts for more than three weeks in the Issues, Trends and Roles category.

David remains committed to raising awareness of bullying across all walks of life, from schools to workplaces. Away from writing and advocacy, he enjoys life with his wife Kelly, their three sons—Jakey, Liam (affectionately known as Gruffy), and Cole —one dog, Obi, and three cats (Anakin, Ahsoka and Padme... spot the connection!) who completes the McCaffrey household.
